HEAVY OIL

Wood Group is a global market leader in the fast-growing heavy oil development industry.

Heavy Oil (SAGD)

We are leaders in the increasingly expanding field of heavy oil development and have supported our clients in the execution of more than $2.7 billion in EPCM services in the thermal heavy oil area, plus additional FEED studies for projects with a collective capital value of more than $6.0 billion.

Unconventional energy resources, such as heavy oil and the oilsands resources of western Canada, are considered key to meeting world energy demand. Wood Group engineering companies have been at the forefront of technology development and project execution for in-situ heavy oil facilities, including steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS).

We have completed conceptual, pre-FEED, FEED, engineering design specifications (EDS) and detailed design and construction management of water treatment systems, steam generation plants and oil treating, production pads and pipelines, roads and related infrastructure for heavy oil facilities. We have also achieved some notable technological advances in this area, including development of the world's first 32-inch DSAW steam distribution pipeline (11 MPa at 344 C) and the first 24-inch buried high-temperature emulsion pipeline (4.2 MPa at 140 C).

We provided full EPCM services on the Orion SAGD project in Alberta's Cold Lake region. This was a grass-roots 10,000 BOPD facility, expandable to 20,000 BOPD, that started up in August 2007 only 32 months after kick-off of FEED. We also served as prime construction contractor and completed the job with 1.1 million man hours, in the field and office, with zero lost-time recordable incidents.
