PIPELINE INTEGRITY

Most North American natural gas pipelines cannot be inspected using in-line intelligent tools or hydrostatic means. This resulted in the development of an alternate inspection methodology, used by Wood Group, called direct assessment.

The U.S. Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) has established a set of regulations impacting operators of hazardous liquids and natural gas transmission lines. Part of the mandate is the development of a comprehensive integrity management program to address ongoing pipeline safety.

One of the first requirements is a pipeline integrity management plan. That is only an initial step in the total process. Equally important stages are the implementation of the plan and the continuing support of the plan. In its regulations, the OPS includes many aspects that must be considered.

  • Identification of threats and sensitive areas
  • Identification of high consequence areas (HCAs)
  • Determination of potential impact zones
  • Baseline and continual assessment using multiple internal/external inspection tools and techniques
  • Location, direct examination and remediation of anomalies
  • Continual evaluation and assessment

  • Communications planning
  • Ongoing training
